How Do Kids Know What’s Fake News?

DemocracyReady NY strategy for providing all students K-12 with media literacy education.

DemocracyReady NY has created a document for the New York state legislature to improve the way educators teach children what’s fact and what’s fiction. Developing Digital Citizens is available for all to read and implement.

The DemocracyReady NY coalition works to improve the conditions and approaches to civic readiness in all schools for all New York children - preK-12th grade.

The Coalition is made up of independent local and national organizations and individuals. Its led by Michael Rebell and hosted by the Center for Education Equity at Columbia University’s Teachers College.

KidCivics is hosting a socratic debate about fake news in which an 11, 15 and 17 year old (all former PS20 students, no adults) will dialogue about how they understand what they see in the news, the strategies they employ to assure they understand the neutrality or bias of the information, verify its accuracy and more. Watch our KidCivics series and Fake News will be up shortly.
