Peacekeepers
Our PeaceKeepers program guides kids to mediate conflicts without the help of adults. We’ve found that this very simple process is applied outside of school by kids as well.
When kids know how to do this the school (and community life) can be more harmonious. The process helps build students’ confidence as they learn to be proactive and help solve problems usually controlled by adults.
How did Peacekeepers start?
Tihun Galt, age 9, led the initiative at PS20 and inspired its development. She felt kids could help other kids resolve problems between themselves. So we followed her lead by creating the program. Indeed, kids embrace it precisely because it is student-led.
Contact us if your school is interested in knowing more about the Peacekeeping program and guide. The guide shows kids clearly how they might organize a mediation between two children (or adults!) who are having a disagreement.
Tihun, a member of Kids Council at PS20, talks about why our programs work for her including Peacekeepers which she inspired to ‘make the school a better place.’ She took responsibiility for acting on what she saw as a problem within her school.
Trained peacekeepers show members of the PTA how to mediate a mock dispute between 2 adults on stage during assembly.
Tihun taught this song, written and shared with us by Quakers, to ‘the littler kids’ during a school assembly at the request of the principal.
